The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. Aim of this scheme is to provide opportunity to the student youth to take part in various Government led community service activities & programs. The primary objective of NSS is to develop the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. NSS was launched in 1969 and since inception, over 7.4 crore students have benefitted from NSS.
NSS at NERIST
NSS NERIST has been in existence since the inception of NERIST. It is a NSS unit recognized by the Regional Directorate of NSS, Guwahati. The strength sanctioned by the Regional Directorate for NSS NERIST stands at 400 volunteers, but as a policy decision to provide all the enrolled students with an opportunity to have exposure to recognized extra-curricular activities; every student who is not enrolled as an NCC cadet is enrolled as an NSS volunteer. These volunteers participate in the noble cause of “Not Me But You” by way of activities like blood donation, cleaning drives, AIDS awareness and many other social activities, spread all round the academic session.
